About the course

The FdSc Advanced Professional Technologies (APT) Award will map directly to the nationally-recognised standards framework and is designed to be:

Fully employer-responsive and learner-responsive in offering personalised learning and a developmental approach in mapping and signposting to the National Standards Frameworks (i.e. National PROCOM Competency Framework, and in turn relates directly to National Occupational Standards and Skills for the Information Age (SFIA) Framework)

All students will need to be employed to be considered for a place on this award. The award is targeted to the individual’s role, business need and productivity improvements through recognising workplace priorities and incorporating a workplace project assessment

What and how do you learn?

Each year you will study 8 modules. Each module earns 15 credits towards the Foundation Degree.

Year 1 – Level 4

  • Introduction to Digital/ICT Organisations
  • Principles of IT Support
  • Innovation & Creativity in the Digital/ICT Environment
  • Underpinning and Developing Technology
  • Personal and Professional Development 1 & 2
  • Work Related Learning 1 & 2

Year 2 – Level 5

  • Leadership & Management in Digital/IT organisations
  • Innovation and Creativity in the Digital/ICT Environment (2)
  • Developing technology
  • IT Services Management
  • Personal and Professional Development 3 & 4
  • Work Based Learning 3 & 4

Qualifications needed to start

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENT is one A-Level at Grade E
or;
National Certificate/Diploma – an overall merit/merit grade in a subject relevant to the course chosen, or;
Other relevant full level 3 qualification, or;
Access Certificate.
In addition we require GCSE grade C in English or equivalent, and;
GCSE grade C Mathematics or equivalent.

We welcome applications from those who have few or non-standard qualifications but a wealth of work and life experience, including appropriate experience in a relevant field, commitment and ability. Applicants in this group will be invited to interview or provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application.

All students must demonstrate before starting the course either through qualifications or testing at interview that they have the required literacy skills to complete the course. Students are also made aware that it may be a requirement of progression on to a top up degree that they have both English and Mathematics GCSE at Grade C. Students who do not have these qualifications have the opportunity to gain them whilst at College.

Assessment

Continuous assessment ensures that student progress is supported and facilitated through tutorials and personal tutor support. A variety of assessment methods are used including coursework, action learning sets, presentations and practical work based around your workplace. Assessments are based around your personal development and a work based project. A detailed assessment grid can be found in the Programme Handbook.

After the course

You will gain a nationally recognised and highly portable IT qualification, which will develop your specific subject knowledge, give you a range of new skills and build your self-confidence.

On successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students can elect to study for one further year towards a BSc (Hons) Degree in Computing (a top up degree is in planning for this qualification) if membership of the British Computer Society, the professional body for IT specialists.
