About the course

The Level 3 Diploma is delivered in the workplace. There is no need for candidates to attend college. The candidate will be allocated an occupationally competent Health and Social Care tutor who will visit the candidate in the workplace at least once per month to provide training, support and assessment.

Achievement of the Diploma will be through a range of methods such as direct observation of the candidate carrying out their day to day working practices, completion of a ‘knowledge’ workbook, written explanations or oral discussions and through collecting other evidence such as work products.

Candidates will be expected to be released from their normal workplace duties for approximately two hours per month to see their college tutor and approximately one hour per week self study time. The average time for someone to complete the Level 3 Diploma is between 9 and 12 months.

The Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care is a nationally recognised qualification based on the Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards approved by Skills for Care & Development.

This qualification will confirm knowledge, skills and competence for people working in job roles with senior and / or supervisory responsibilities within the health and social care sector, such as within residential settings, primary care environments, domiciliary services, day services and supported living.

What will I learn?

Each unit within the Diploma has a credit rating and to achieve the Level 3 Diploma, learners must complete 9 mandatory units along with a choice of optional knowledge and competence units equalling an overall 58 credits.

Mandatory Units:

• Unit 1: Promote Communication in Health, Social Care Settings.
• Unit 2: Engage in Personal Development in Health, Social Care Settings.
• Unit 3: Promote Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care Settings.
• Unit 4: Principles for Implementing Duty of Care in Health, Social Care Settings.
• Unit 5: Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Health and Social Care.
• Unit 6: The Role of the Health and Social-Care Worker.
• Unit 7: Promote Person-Centred Approaches in Health and Social Care Settings.
• Unit 8: Promote and Implement Health and Safety in Health and Social Care.
• Unit 9: Promote Good Practice in Handling Information in Health and Social Care Settings.

The optional knowledge and competence units cover different areas of health and social care such as administering medication, principles of independent advocacy and implementing person-centred approaches. Learners have the opportunity to take a general qualification in health and social care, or they may follow specialist pathways in Dementia Care or Learning Disabilities.

Qualifications needed to start

All candidates must be working in the Health and Social Care Sector and in a senior / supervisory role.

Future Opportunities

Progression to the Health and Social Care NVQ Level 4 course – dependent on job role.
