About the course
The Award in Team Leading is a nationally recognised qualification. It is specifically designed for practising and aspiring Team Leaders/Supervisors, providing a solid foundation in their formal development and training. This qualification would be advantageous for anyone who is looking to establish themselves in a supervisory or management career, or who would like to be accredited for current skills and experience.
What and how do you learn?
Students complete 2 or 3 workbooks and assignments linked to ILM study units. All students study the mandatory unit:
- Developing yourself as a team leader.
Plus one or two optional units from a range of options including the following:
- Developing the work team.
- Dealing with change in the workplace.
- Briefing the work team.
- Leading your work team.
- Using information to solve problems.
- Using resources efficiently in the workplace.
- Providing quality to customers.
- Maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
Distance learning provides the flexibility to complete the assessments at a time that is suitable to the student and to fit in with other commitments. The variety and choice of workbooks means that you can focus on areas of most benefit to you and your work role. As a student with ILM you are entitled to free membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Qualifications required to start
There are no formal entry requirements but participants will:
- Be either practising or aspiring first line managers who have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme.
- Have the necessary skills (or be willing to work towards these) to enable them to meet the assessment demands.
Assessment
There is a short written assignment to be completed with each workbook.
About the tutor
The tutor has worked with a wide range of organisations and business as a consultant, trainer and assessor. She has delivered and assessed management courses from level 2 through to degree level.

After the course
Successful participants may benefit from career enhancement and/or may be able to progress to:
- NVQ Level 3 in Management, depending on their workplace responsibilities
- ILM Certificate or Diploma in First Line Management (Level 3)
- Other similar qualifications
