About the course

Performing Engineering Operations is a practical work based course with associated theory. You will study six units three of which have a strong practical bias.

You will learn and develop measurement, marking out and hand skills, machining skills to include drilling, centre lathe turning, vertical and horizontal milling all of which are part of a Modern Apprentice Framework. The course can be delivered over two days for one academic year , or full-time to include the Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma depending on your GCSE results.

What will I learn?

The course consists of six units:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Preparing and using milling machines

How will I be assessed?

Theory subjects are internally assessed through written assignments and end tests.

Practical work is assessed by the manufacture of test pieces followed by the completion of a task booklet which includes a self inspection and a  formal staff assessment  detailing the accuracy and surface finish of the component.

What are the entry requirements?

A minimum of 4 GCSE grade D to include Maths English and Science subjects

Future Opportunities

When combined with the Level 2 Diploma course it is equivalent to the first year of a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering.

When combined with a Level 3 Diploma it is equivalent to the first year of an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering.
