About the course

This is a part-time one year course.

GCSE English / English Language prepares and supports you to: develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, develop confidence and fluency in understanding and communication and apply these skills in solving real world situations and tasks.

You will learn through class-based teaching and through homework.

What will I learn?

You will study:

  • Unit 1: Understanding and producing non-fiction texts.
  • Unit 2: Speaking and listening.
  • Unit 3: (English 4700) Understanding and producing creative texts.
    This includes reading an extended text e.g. a novel or short story and producing a written response to this. You will also produce creative / imaginative writing (fiction or non-fiction).
  • Unit 3: (English Language 4705) Understanding spoken and written texts and writing creatively.
    This includes reading an extended text e.g. a novel or short story and producing a written response to this. You will also produce creative / imaginative writing (fiction or non-fiction) and investigate an aspect of spoken language and produce a written response.

What skills will I develop?

You will develop fluency and competency in reading and understanding, confidence and accuracy in writing, including spelling and grammar and develop skills for speaking and listening in a range both formal and informal situations including expressing own views and options within discussion.

What are the entry requirements?

To begin the GCSE course you should already be fluent in reading, be able to accurately understanding a variety of extended texts and be able to write your ideas clearly.

Previous qualifications may be:

GCSE Grade D/E (or equivalent) for entry to Foundation level tier.
GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) for Higher tier.

However, at interview we discuss your previous qualifications, ask you to complete a short assessment and offer advice regarding the most suitable course.

How will I be assessed?

During the course your tutor will give class assignments and homework. Your tutor will give you regular feedback to ensure you know how you are progressing and give support for the skills areas you need to develop.

The course is assessed through external examination which is available at 2 levels:

Foundation tier: Possible grades C-G
Higher tier: Possible grade A* – D

Unit 1: Assessment is 40% of total marks through a written external examination which will be held at a date set by the examination board in June. The paper is 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Unit 2: Assessment is 20% of the total marks through “controlled assessment” which is internally assessed and externally moderated.
Unit 3: Assessment is 40% of the total marks. Tasks produced under “controlled” assessment conditions are internally assessed and externally moderated.

Daytime classes: £300 + £30 exam fee + £10 registration
Evening classes: £180 + £30 exam fee + £10 registration

**Concessions are available for daytime classes. The details of these are as follows:

  • 16- 18 years : eligible for fee remission for tuition and examination fees.
  • 19+ students on active benefits (Job Seekers Allowance): eligible for fee remission for tuition, examination fees and college administration fee.
  • Students aged 19-24 (not on active benefits) who do not hold a GCSE at Grade C and above : eligible for tuition fee remission but required to pay examination and college administration fee.
  • Aged 25+ and in receipt of:
    1. Income Support or
    2. Incapacity Benefit or
    3. Working Tax Credit.
    Eligible for fee remission for tuition fee but required to pay examination fees and college administration fee.

You attend either one evening session or one daytime session each week at the same centre.

How to apply/enrol

Students enrolling on full-time courses at Leeds City College: All students who enrol on full-time courses at the College will have the opportunity to re-sit their GCSE English/Maths and/or enrol on Functional skills qualifications as appropriate.

Therefore students who intend to / have enrolled on a full-time course at Leeds City College MUST NOT enrol separately for these part-time GCSEs. Enrolment to GCSE English & Maths / Functional Skill courses will be completed as part of your enrolment for your full-time/vocational course.

Before enrolment you will be required to give details of previous English/Maths qualifications and undertake a short interview/assessment.
