City & Guilds 7305 (Level 5)
Duration: 1 Year
Study Type: Part Time
Venue: Horsforth Campus view map »
Course Code: 32033-01

What will I learn?

You will cover the requirements of the professional standards for Full Role ESOL specialist teachers/tutors/trainers in the post-16 sector, which were introduced by Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) in September 2007. The LLUK units covered are:

  • Literacy, ESOL and the learners (Level 4)
  • ESOL theories and frameworks (Level 5)
  • ESOL learning and teaching (Level 5).

City and Guilds has combined these into two modules. The qualification is designed to enable you to:

  • Adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching ESOL.
  • Reflect on your own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development.
  • Identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation for ESOL learners.
  • Develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Develop an awareness of your professional role and responsibilities.

The 45-credit Additional Diploma includes 120 contact hours, when a variety of strategies will be used including whole-class, small group, pair and individual work, presentations, case studies and workshop activities.

The 330 non-contact hours (self-directed study) includes time for reading and research activities, as well as opportunities to observe other practitioners and complete your 75 hours of teaching practice (including 4 observations by the course team).

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams. The assessment requirements can be found in the qualification handbook at www.cityandguilds.com/qtls They include assignments and practical tasks alongside two key elements:

  • A Reflective Learning Journal that extends across the length and breadth of the programme.
  • A Teaching Practice Portfolio (which includes practical observations of you teaching groups four times by the course team).

What are the entry requirements?

  • You need to complete an entry assessment to fulfil LLUK criteria that demonstrate your skills in English at Level 3.
  • You need to have completed your generic teaching qualification, or started the generic Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Cert Ed) by taking the PTLLS unit.
  • You need to be teaching ESOL both on a 1:1 and group basis for a variety of learners across a minimum of two curriculum levels for at least 75 hours during the course.

Future opportunities

You will be a LLUK-qualified Subject Specialist in ESOL. If you have not already completed your generic teaching qualification, you will need to complete the DTLLS (Cert Ed) requirements to become fully qualified.
