Chair of Governors
A former governor at local primary and high schools and with over 15 years of governance experience in further education in Leeds, more recently as Chair of the Board since October 2014, Dr Shaid Mahmood has worked in a diverse range of senior roles in the business and public sectors. Committed to making a positive difference to the lives of others, he has worked nationally and regionally, led the integration of public services and worked closely with the Commercial and Third Sectors and with local Politicians. Shaid is also a serving Board Member of a housing association and a senior officer at Leeds City Council.
With a background in Human Resource Development as well as further and higher education Tina is the Chief Executive of People Matters. This is a Leeds SME and social enterprise working across the education, health and social care sectors whose members have learning and other disabilities. Tina previously worked nationally in FE managing strategy and development work within workforce development. She is also the chair of the Leeds Citizens' Advice Bureau which leads the consortium providing advice for the people of Leeds.
A Chartered Accountant and music graduate, Cherry is now at the National Centre for Early Music. In addition to serving as Vice Chair of the Board, Cherry is Chair of the Audit Committee and a Director of Leeds College of Music.
Chief Executive & Principal
Prior to joining Leeds City College, Colin was Principal of Barnsley College for seven years where he steered the College to an Ofsted rating of outstanding.
He has worked in the further education sector for over 30 years; his background is as a teacher and manager in Skills for Life and provision for students with disabilities or learning difficulties. He has also worked as a part-time inspector for Ofsted and the Adult Learning Inspectorate.
Colin was awarded an OBE for services to further education in the Queen’s 2015 New Year Honours list.
Robert is the staff elected governor on the Board and a lecturer for Functional Skills and Trade Union Studies at the College.
Emily is the Student Governor and Students’ Union President for 2015/17
After starting with the college and SU, as a HE Student in 2014/15, she was successful in her election to SU President in March 2015 which was followed by students re-electing her in March 2016. Emily is also a Committee member for the FE Committee of the National Union of Students, attending regular meetings and working on improve the Democracy, Education and Welfare of students across the country.
Libby is a senior private and public sector Chief Executive and a Director of York Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust. She is Director of Yellowmead, helping national organisations align their strategic branding and values activity, and Chair of the Board of Directors of Leeds College of Music.
Becky is a commercially focused HR professional with a successful track record in financial services and legal services sectors, operating across all business functions. Extensive experience in developing and implementing HR strategy to deliver business objectives and delivering strategic change programmes. She has several years’ experience as a non-executive director in the learning sector. Becky is General Manager (People) at Leeds Building Society and is a Director of The Leeds Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA).
Gerald Jennings runs GR Jennings Properties having recently left his role at Land Securities as Retail Portfolio Director. Gerald and his team were responsible for city centre retail assets in Leeds and Cardiff. In Leeds Land Securities owns and manages the flagship centres, White Rose and Trinity Leeds, the city’s first 1 million ft² regional shopping and leisure destination, which opened in Spring 2013. In Cardiff the St David’s Centre extends to 1.4 million ft² and dominates retail in the Welsh capital. Gerald is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and has worked in the retail property sector for over 25 years. He joined Land Securities in 1999 after spending 14 years with the Burton Group now known as Arcadia.
Gerald is also President of Leeds Chamber of Commerce and a Director of The Ahead Partnership.
Christine Smith is a Commercial General Manager with extensive cross functional experience, combining financial and commercial skills. Formerly a Category Director at Morrisons, Christine is now with Intertek Testing Services Ltd.
Adam Beaumont is the CEO and Founder of aql, Leeds. Both a scientist and an electrical engineer, Adam started his career with a PhD in Physical Chemistry and a 3 year stint as Leeds University’s youngest lecturer, before moving into Secure Mobile Communications for the Defence Evaluation Research Agency (an agency of the MoD). In 1998 Adam formed aql, offering automated domain registration services prior to the internet “boom”. Adam is a patron of the Leeds Community Foundation and a board member of the Leeds Sustainable Development Group. Adam is also a founder and board member of IX Leeds – the only mutual, not for profit, internet exchange outside of London – the main internet peering hub for the north.
