What is it?

This is a programme that provides financial and experiential incentives to facilitate the entry of STEM professionals into teaching. The focus will be on one of the four prioritised sector areas:

  • Childcare and education
  • Digital
  • Construction
  • Engineering and manufacturing.

The programme is divided into two strands. One strand is to provide financial support for industry professionals from the priority sectors listed above to become FE teachers, covering the course costs of teacher training as well as support and mentoring. Another strand is to support the participation and progression of STEM professionals into teaching through a 40-hour paid work placement opportunity and professional development scheme.

This project is part of the Department for Education’s Taking Teaching Further programme managed by the Education and Training Foundation (et-foundation.co.uk/).

Strand 1: Financial Support for Initial Teacher Education

A fully paid teaching role that offers specialist training in your chosen field. You will develop your skills in teaching, and apply your industry knowledge to teaching. Each individual to be supported will:

  • Be an industry professional – defined as an individual who has worked for a minimum of three years in their area of vocation and is at the time of applying to become an FE teacher, still working in that same industry or has been within the last 18 months.
  • Be from within one of the four prioritised sector areas: childcare and education, digital, construction, engineering and manufacturing or another priority STEM subject specialist area where teaching vacancies are hard to fill and one of these subject areas should comprise the substantive part of their teaching timetable.
  • Not already hold a substantive teaching qualification such as a Level 5 teaching qualification (DET) or other equivalent/higher level teaching qualification.
  • Not already be working within Leeds City College.

Strand 2: 40-hour paid work placement in teaching

An opportunity to engage in 40 hours of paid work that can be delivered flexibly around your availability. Experience teaching and share your knowledge and insight through a co-teaching approach, working alongside experienced teaching staff at the college. The work placement is eligible to those who are working in one of the priority areas at the moment.
